The prayer of salvation, commonly known as the sinner’s prayer, has been a prayer those who receive the gospel are made to recite.

But is there anywhere in the bible where you must say a prayer before receiving salvation? Let’s look at some texts from the bible and how they relate to the prayer of salvation.

Where Is The Salvation Prayer In The Bible?

Contrary to beliefs on the popular prayer for sinners, nowhere in the new testament references such prayer. However, the scriptures reveal God’s provision for man’s eternal salvation that requires only our belief and confession.

In Romans 10:9-10, these verses show us the critical aspect of the gospel that the receiver must acknowledge. “That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; For with the heart there is believing unto righteousness, and with the mouth, there is confession unto salvation”.

The verses focus our attention on what is most important to God in receiving eternal life; confessing with your mouth Jesus as Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Why are these crucial in receiving salvation?

God’s plan of salvation is to give the receiver a new heart that believes unto righteousness. He does this by taking away the heart of stone that rebels and disobeys God and gives a new heart of flesh.

Therefore, a repentant heart is needed to receive this new heart of faith that subsequently lives to please God. But, on the other hand, if a heart is unrepentant or does not believe the gospel, it cannot confess that Jesus is Lord.

How Do You Accept Jesus As Lord and Savior?

To accept Jesus as Lord requires the recipient to have heard the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom. Without this, you may struggle through your Christian journey and be void of the true salvation experience.

The gospel of the kingdom is a call to the kingdom of God where God regulates the citizens through His Holy Spirit.

In the new testament, the way to receive Jesus as Lord is by believing the gospel, and repenting so that you may receive forgiveness of sins. Believing the gospel leads to repentance which means a change of mind or direction.

What Is An Example Of Salvation in the Bible?

A good example of salvation in the Bible (Luke 19:1-10) was the conversion experience of Zaccheus. This rich tax collector sought to see Jesus Christ when He passed through Jericho.

Being small in stature, he wasn’t visible enough to see Jesus because of the crowd thronging Him. Therefore, he resolved to climb a tree ahead of Jesus’s passing.

When Jesus got to the place (tree) where Zaccheus was, Jesus looked up and asked him to hurry down from the tree, offering to stay in his house that day.

Zaccheus hurried and came down to receive Jesus into his house. However, a significant event happened after Jesus went into Zaccheus’ house.

Zaccheus repented for all wrongs he had done to others in his entire life. Jesus didn’t ask Zaccheus to confess his sins or say a sinner’s prayer to have his sins forgiven and receive salvation. Zaccheus had a broken spirit and voluntarily confessed his sin to live a life pleasing to God.

On the contrary, Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come into your house because he also is a son of Abraham.” For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which is lost (Luke 19:9-10).
